PRINT / EDITORIAL

The most prestigious type of print work is editorial modeling, or modeling for magazines . Editorial modeling includes fashion stories that showcase the latest style trends--the newest looks in coats, the must-have shoes for spring, or the new suits for fall. The other major type of editorial story is beauty-related , which means anything having to do with skin care, hair care, makeup, or cosmetic procedures such as facials and massages.

Fashion magazines establish the visual standards-the style of photography, the types of model, the graphics--for the fashion industry as a whole. Because of the creative license they enjoy, magazines are the launch pad for many new and innovative ideas. Magazines are where new fashions and ideas come alive, whether they involve clothing, makeup, hair, or lifestyle trends.

If fashion designers decide that minikirts should be revived, this idea won't take hold in consumers' minds until a magazine features them in a story. Minis can be in every boutique, specialty, and department store and every catalog, but few people will buy them util they see them on some fabulous model in Elle, Glamour or Seventeen. Once one of these magazines gives minis the stamp of approval, consumers realize that minis are back in fashion and are much more likely to go out and spend their money.

Celebrities now share a lot of the editorial work with models, both in traditional fashion magazines and in celebrity magazines. Magazines such as InStyle, People and Us magazines have become a new source of fashion information, showing and telling what the stars are wearing.

Established editorial models in New York, Paris and Milan do most the editorial work because thats where the majority of magazines are based. Many of the top modeling agencies, such as Elite, Ford, IMG and Next have offices in Chicago, Miami, Los Angles and may appear in magazines based in those cities, but it's unlikely they would be hired to appear in a well-known magazine in a fashion captial. Because so few magazines are located in these cities, editorial work for models in local markets is very limited. Model agents are the best referals of finding modeling opportunities in the cities because they have business and professional relationships(many local agencies act as scouts) for the larger model agencies located in New York, Paris, Milan and London.

Even for models who do get lucky and are booked to appear in magazines, this is usually just a phase that happens early in their careers. During this period, they're known as editorial models because they're appearing in so many magazines stories. When you've appeared in a magazine, the rest of the industry-fashion designers booking runway shows, advertisers, catalog, as well as other magazines.

Being a successful editorial model benefits all aspects of a model's career. If a model is featured on the covers and pages of numerous magazines, her career is made. She will be able to demand the higest pay rate(pay varies according to pubications and location) and enjoy the incredible perks that go with with a successful modeling career.

Editorial itself doesn't pay well($300) for a a cover shot, but the payoff comes with the exposure and prestige editorial offers because the model will be demand for her services and her day rate for catalog, advertising, and fashion shows.

Editorial is the best way to build your portfolio when you're just starting out. It's more creative than other types of work, too. You get to experiment with different looks and work with the best people in the industry. Editorial work allows a model to demonstrate that you have personality and range, that there's something special about you. A portfolio featuring a lot of editorial tear sheets inspires clients, which helps you land more jobs. www.themodelinggame.blogspot.com
